How Origami Cranes Help raised 2 Million Dollars

One July afternoon, a truck full of paper cranes arrived at the Brooklyn studio of Vik Muniz, a Brazilian-born artist known for building images from unconventional materials like diamonds, spaghetti and dust. “I was like, ‘Where are you going to put all these?’” he says. Well the story is that an ATM receipt was found from a Capitol One Bank in East Hampton showing an account with an available balance of a $99,864,731.94

DealBreaker.com is the company that posted this hot news on Wednesday June 18 The receipt is reported to have been left in the ATM after the account holder withdrew the cash.

DealBreaker later identified the account holder as David Tepper, a hedge fund manager and founder of Appaloosa Management. The site reports that Tepper joked after withdrawing the money that he “hadn’t used an ATM since Lehman.”

On Wednesday night Tepper denied even being in the Hamptons in June, maybe he doesn’t want to let people that he is that loaded and the fact that having that much money in a saving account doesn’t yield that much of an interest.

“I would never do something as irresponsible as leaving $100 million in a savings account,” he toldThe Post. This statement might have been spoken to cover that fact that he is poorly investing his money.

It’s as simple as logging into your account on the Chase Mobile iPhone app and snapping a photo of both the front and back of the check. Soon after, it will land in your account without the need to fill out deposit slips or deal with a surly teller. USAA has been offering the same functionality for over a year, but Chase is the first mainstream national bank to embrace the picture possibilities. Call 877-275-3342 to verify that your bank is covered by the FDIC, which is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. The $250,000 limit was scheduled to revert to the previous $100,000 limit after December 31, 2009, but Congress just passed a bill that extends it to 2013.

FDIC insurance covers checking accounts, savings accounts, money-market accounts, certificates of deposit and retirement accounts. You can insure substantially more than $250,000 if you arrange ownership of the accounts properly. Use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance estimator to figure out if the total amount of your deposits is covered.
Credit-union deposits up to $250,000 are protected by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. You’ll be charged a transfer fee (typically $5) rather than an overdraft fee ($ 25 to $27 is the median at community banks and credit unions, $33 at mega-banks).
